What is Mammography ?

Annual screening mammograms are used to detect breast cancer before a patient has symptoms or concerns. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer to affect American women. Although the majority of breast cancers are found in women, men should also be aware of symptoms and report any breast changes to their physician.

Mammography is a safe, low dose x-ray of the breast that can detect very small cancers or other changes within the breast. A mammogram can find a growth 2 to 3 years before it can be felt.

Preparing for your visit.

  • Shower the day of the exam.
  • You will need to undress from the waist up, so you may prefer to wear a 2-piece outfit.
  • Do not use deodorant, powders or lotions around your breasts or under arms.
  • Bring previous mammogram films if taken at another facility.

When preparing for your mammogram, tell the scheduling department of your personal history of breast cancer, implants or newly developed warning signs.

Will I always need to have a yearly mammogram?

YES! The risk of breast cancer increases sharply with age. Most doctors' recommend that you begin having yearly mammograms at age 40.

Mammography is the single best method for the early detection of breast cancer.
